I’m scared of heights, will that be a problem?

Actually, quite the opposite. If you aren’t afraid of heights a little bit, there’s probably something not right upstairs. We are all afraid, but we have learned proper technique in the use of – and developed trust in – our equipment.

In all of our events we employ a principle called Challenge by Choice. This means that you must decide, on your own, to challenge yourself by participating in an activity. We will not force you – or allow anyone else to force you – to do anything. However, we do ask for Permission to Persuade. We were all in your shoes at one time, and we are experts at helping others face their fears. With our help, we are sure that you can overcome any obstacle we put in your path.

What will I need to bring for my course or event?

For VFI Teams events we provide all of your technical equipment. This includes all group equipment (ropes and other hardware), individual equipment (tethers, carabiners, and other hardware), and personal protective equipment (PPE – harnesses and helmets). This is standard practice in the challenge course industry and any rare exceptions to this policy are handled on a case by case basis.

For VFI Guiding and Training events we invite our students to bring some of their own equipment. We provide all of the group equipment (ropes, webbing and cord, protection, and other hardware), but you may use your own individual equipment and PPE, subject to the following conditions:

  • Your equipment passes inspection of one of our instructors (we want to confirm your equipment is in good working order)
  • You purchased your equipment new from a reputable outdoor retailer (it is important to know the history of your equipment and this is inherently not the case if you received or purchased your equipment second hand)
    • Note: this does not mean that your equipment must be brand new when you show up to your event, merely that you are the only owner and user of your equipment
  • You know how to use your equipment (we will not pretend to know how to use your equipment if we have not used it before ourselves)
    • Note: if you are bringing brand new equipment to an entry level course, we are happy to teach you how to use your equipment, provided that we are familiar with the model. If we are not familiar with its use, we may ask you to use our equipment instead.

For any event, technical equipment is not all you’ll need. Weather in the high desert is unpredictable and proper nutrition and hydration are essential. You should consider bringing some, or all, of the following items with you:

  • A couple of layers of clothing so you can stay warm, including a rain jacket and pants
  • Good tennis shoes or light hiking boots
  • A hat that you can wear under a helmet
  • Good leather climbing or rappelling gloves
  • A water bottle (we have water) and snacks

What happens if I need to change or cancel my registration?

We understand that life happens and sometimes plans change. Please refer to our change and cancellation policy for a more detailed answer to this question.

Will I need to sign a waiver?

Yes, you will need to sign our liability waiver and photo release. You can view our waiver here.

Where do you conduct your training?

Many of our events and courses are held at the world class Alpine Towers facility at Front Sight Firearms Training Institute. The address for this facility is:

1 Front Sight Rd
Pahrump, NV 89061

Click here for a map of our facility and to get directions. You’ll be able to see some of our events from the front gate. Tell the greeter at the gate you have an event at the ropes facility and proceed to the base of our facility. Turn right after the gate and then left in front of the classroom and ranges. You will see a conex at the base of the structures, this is where you will check-in and get geared up.
